Yesterday was my best (and oldest) friend’s birthday. I dare not disclose her age (she’s a very dignified lady), but the vet assured us that she is now way past a hundred human years (ça fait un bail qu’elle est centenaire). She may not see so well any longer, or hear, but her sense of smell and extra long whiskers guide her securely in her daily inconsequential businesses, such as plotting the permanent disposal of neighbours’ cat Nikita.
She really appreciates it when you spontaneously give her a treat.
Otherwise, she has to remind you and well, that’s just annoying, at her age, to have to stoop to begging. So over the years, she developped what I style Dog Judo: her own subtle way of making you understand that Now Could Be Such A Lovely Time For A Treat. Basically, she twists your arm until you get up and then she escorts you to the treat box. Humans are so easily convinced.
The web teems with dog treat recipes - it’s crazy. I was looking for something with no meat. It gives Jodiedog the ichies. She loved this particular recipe, and so did her good friend Jimmy the Yorkshire terrier, although lord knows he has a reputation for being picky.
In a food processor, combine all dry ingredients: 2 1/2c flour (whole wheat if you desire), 3/4c dry milk, 1tsp of sugar (can be omitted) and 1tsp salt (idem), and combine well. Quickly add an egg, 6 tbsp oil and 3/4c water (I replaced it partly with leftover tagine juice). Don’t overmix so that it doesn’t turn into a big elastic blob.
Roll it out (thickness is up to you), ask your dog which shapes he/she likes best, cut accordingly. Bake for about 25 min (depending on the size of the biscuits) in a 350°F hot oven. They should be hard and dry but not excessively browned. Keep in an air-tight box. Joyeux anniversaire, gros chien.

take the goddam mail and hand over the treats willya
I love this post! I have so wanted to make dog treats for Marty but haven’t taken the time. Husband is former vet and says if I make them all it takes is flour and water! For now, we chope up stale bread into bite-sized pieces and Marty goes nuts! But I think I’ll try your recipe, sounds basic but pretty darn good.
Happy Birthday Lovely Dog!

Happy Birthday to the sophisticated lady! Those dog treats look really good. I am not sure it ever has occurred to me make doggy bones for furry friends. I might have to reconsider.
Very nice blog post!
That looks like one contented canine!
Hmmm… I wonder if my cats Farrow and Robespierre would eat these?
(Oh, who am I kidding, they’ll eat anything. Especially Robespierre- he thinks he’s a dog anyway.)
